It's with pleasure and great honor that we are taking over as Editors-in-chief of the Journal of Oral Medicine and Oral Surgery. To start this editorial, we would like to thank all the previous editors of the journal, especially Jean-Christophe Fricain and Philippe Lesclous for their confidence to continue the development of the journal. As detailed in a previous editorial [1], they have worked on the « transformation of the journal to meet the editorial requirements of a modern scientific journal and to gain [international] visibility ». Based on the increasing number of manuscripts submitted everyday, we can confirm that this objective was successful. As stated by Jean Christophe, the next step is to obtain more international recognition by obtaining the Medline indexation in the coming years.
As there are already several international journals of high quality dealing with oral and maxillofacial surgery, we could wonder why should we work so hard in the development of JOMOS?
First, this is the official journal the French Society of Oral Medicine and Oral Surgery (SFCO) [2], allowing the diffusion of the scientific positions of the society. All the recommendations of the SFCO have been published in JOMOS and we encourage the development of these interactions for the diffusion of evidence-based data in Oral Medicine and Oral Surgery. JOMOS should continue to be SFCO's showcase in the international Oral Medicine and Oral Surgery community.
Second, we have the chance to benefit from a continuous support of SFCO that finances the free open access of the journal: it's important to highlight this specificity of JOMOS, as this financial support allows us to maintain our independence and to bring an international scientific platform to all authors for publication in Oral Medicine and Oral Surgery at no cost.
Then, as University Professors, we are convinced that the training of our students must be based on reading and discussing scientific papers, and we believe that articles published in JOMOS can be the basis of staffs in Oral Medicine and Oral Surgery departments in France and abroad. The next step for our students is to write their own manuscripts, as it's the best way to deeply understand and to take a critical look at their work: that's why we deeply encourage out interns in training to submit their work in JOMOS for publication. As you may know, the publication of at least one international paper is a prerequisite to validate the diploma in Oral Surgery in France and JOMOS fully support this initiative.
Finally, we would like to remind that all articles published in JOMOS have been peer-reviewed by a least 2 independent experts in the field who are selected by a panel of associate editors. We are grateful for their time and commitment as they are the key of scientific quality and independence of our journal. We are looking forward to good will for these tasks, which are another way to improve the knowledge in Oral Medicine and Oral Surgery.
To conclude, we believe there are plenty of topics open for discussion in our specialty and again, JOMOS can serve as an evidence-based platform to support these debates. As discussed before, we encourage the scientific community to use this tool to spread out our specialty in the local, national and international level: do not hesitate to use it!
We have caught the torch of JOMOS and we are ready for a great journey with all our authors, reviewers, editors and of course you, the readers!
